  • Reporting what someone said

Grammar - Reported Speech: Present Simple

When we report what someone has already said in the present simple, we use the past simple.

  • DIRECT SPEECHREPORTED SPEECH
  • PRESENT SIMPLE PAST SIMPLE

Examples - DIRECT SPEECHREPORTED SPEECH

  • "I like the food."
  • She said she liked the food.
  • "I go to the beach every day."
  • He said he went to the beach every day.

Be Careful!

  • In informal reported speech people often use the present simple if something is still true now.
  • He said that he liked cats
  • He said that he likes cats. (informal)

Grammar - Reported Speech: can

When we report what someone has already said with can, we use could.

  • DIRECT SPEECH REPORTED SPEECH
  • can could

Examples - cancould

  • "I can help."
  • She said she could help.
  • "I can do it."
  • He said he could do it.
