The Past Simple Tense: Open Questions

We use the auxiliary verb did in questions.

Did is the past form of do.

For open questions (questions with many possible answers), we use a question word.

  • Q. + did + SUBJECT + INFINITIVE ... ?
  • DOdid
  • SUBJECT + PAST VERB (V2) ...
  • What did you do yesterday?
  • I played football/chess/games/... .
  • When did she finish?
  • She finished at 5/6/7/... .

Be Careful!

  • Use the INFINITIVE for questions.
  • What did he played yesterday?
  • What did he play yesterday?
  • Don’t use did with be.
  • Where did you be yesterday?
  • Where were you yesterday?
