The Past Simple Tense: Verbs vs Be


Usage - BE (Past Simple)

We use the verb be with nouns, adjectives, prepositions and the passive voice.

In the past simple we do not usually use be with other verbs.

  • BE + NOUN
  • I was a student in 2005.
  • BE + ADJECTIVE
  • You were good yesterday.
  • BE + PREPOSITION
  • He was at work last week.
  • BE + VERB
  • I was played football yesterday.
  • I played football yesterday.

Examples - BE (Past Simple)

SUBJ.BE...TIME PHRASE
Iwasa studentin 2005.

Hewasat worklast Monday.
