Be in the Past Simple Tense: was/were


Grammar - Be: The Past Simple Tense

In the past simple tense, be has the forms was and were.

For I, He, She and It, we use was in the past simple.

For You, We and They, we use were in the past simple.

  • BEwas/were
  • I/He/She/It + was
  • He was busy last week.
  • You/We/They + were
  • We were at work yesterday.

Be Careful!

  • was/were → CONTRACTION ✘
  • I's busy yesterday.
  • I was busy yesterday.
