Grammar - The Past Simple Tense: Negatives

We use the auxiliary did with not to form negatives.

We usually contract the negative did not into didn't.

  • SUBJECT + NEG. AUX. + INF.
  • did not didn't
  • I/You/He/She/It/We/They + didn't + INF.
  • I didn't work yesteday.
  • She didn't go to the bank.

Examples - The Past Simple Tense: Negative Contractions

Be Careful!

  • Use the INFINITIVE for NEGATIVES.
  • I didn't played yesterday.
  • I didn't play yesterday.
  • He didn't went yesterday.
  • He didn't go yesterday.
  • Don’t use didn't with be.
  • He didn't be OK.
  • He wasn't OK.
