Grammar - The Present Simple Tense: Negatives

We use the auxiliaries do and does with not to form the negative.

We usually contract the negatives do not and does not into don't and doesn't.

  • SUBJECT + NEG. AUXILIARY + INFINITIVE.
  • do not don't
  • I/You/We/They + don't + INFINITIVE
  • I don't like spiders.
  • does not doesn't
  • He/She/It + doesn't + INFINITIVE
  • He doesn't speak French.

Examples - The Present Simple Tense: Negative Contractions

SUBJ.NEG. AUX.INF....
Idon'tlikespiders.
Youdon'tplayoften.
Hedoesn'texercisemuch.
Shedoesn'teatmeat.
Itdoesn'tsnowoften.
Wedon'tneedhelp.

Be Careful!

  • Use the INFINITIVE for NEGATIVES.
  • He doesn't likes spiders.
  • He doesn't like spiders.
  • Don’t use don't/doesn't with be.
  • He doesn't be from Spain.
  • He isn't from Spain.
