The Past Simple Tense: Closed Questions & Short Answers


Grammar - The Past Simple Tense: Closed Questions ➤ Yes/No

For closed questions (for the responses: yes and no), we use did and didn't.

  • Did + SUBJ. + INFINITIVE ... ?
  • Yes, + SUBJ. + did
  • Did + SUBJ. + INFINITIVE ... ?
  • No, + SUBJ. + didn't
  • DOdid
  • Yes, + I/you/he/she/it/we/they + did.
  • Did you work yesterday?
  • Yes, I did.
  • No, + I/you/he/she/it/we/they + didn't.
  • Did he go last week?
  • No, he didn't.

Examples - The Past Simple Tense: Closed Questions ➤ Yes/No

QUESTION Y/NSUBJ.AUX.
Did I pass last week?➤ Yes,youdid.
Did you play yesterday?➤ Yes,Idid.
Did he come this year?➤ Yes,hedid.
Did she swim yesterday?➤ No,shedidn't.
Did it rain last night?➤ Yes,itdid.
Did we help yesterday?➤ Yes,wedid.
Did they work last year?➤ No,theydidn't.

Be Careful!

  • Use the INFINITIVE for questions.
  • Did he played yesterday?
  • Did he play yesterday?
  • Don’t use Did with be.
  • Did you be OK?
  • Were you OK?
