The Present Perfect Tense vs the Past Simple Tense


Usage - Present Perfect

We use the present perfect tense for life experiences (at any time before now) and events occurring at least once in the past. We don't say the time that they happened.

  • Life Experience
  • Not a Specific Time
  • Where have you been to?
  • I've been to Egypt before.

Usage - Past Simple

We use the past simple tense for completed actions at a specific time in the past.

  • Specific Time
  • When did you go to Egypt?
  • I went to Egypt last year.

Examples - Present Perfect

I've been to Egyptbefore.
I've been to Egyptonce.

Examples - Past Simple

I went to Egyptlast year.
I went to Egyptin 2017.

Be Careful!

We often begin with the present perfect tense when we discuss life experiences. We then use the past simple tense for more specific information.

  • Have you ever been to Egypt?
  • Yes, I have.
  • When did you go there?
  • I went there last year.
  • What did you see?
