We often contract the negatives are not and is not into aren't and isn't.

  • am not 'm not
  • I + 'm not + INFINITIVE-ing
  • I'm not working now.
  • are not aren't/'re not
  • You/We/They + aren't + INFINITIVE-ing
  • They aren't fishing at the moment.
  • is not isn't/'s not
  • He/She/It + isn't + INFINITIVE-ing
  • He isn't reading right now.

Be Careful!

  • am notamn't.
  • am not'm not.

Examples - The Present Continuous Tense: Negative Contractions

S. + NEG. CONT.INF.-ing
I'm notcooking.
You aren'ttalking.
He isn'treading.
She isn'tsleeping.
It isn'tworking.
We aren'tlistening.
They aren'tcoming.

We can contract the negatives are not and is not into 're not and 's not.
