The Past Continuous Tense: Verb Forms


Usage - The Past Continuous Tense

We use the present continuous tense for an action happening at the same time as another action in the past.

We use a past simple clause for the shorter action.

We use a past continuous clause for the longer action.

  • Action happening at the same time as another action in the past
  • Shorter Action: Past Simple Clause
  • Longer Action: Past Continuous Clause

Grammar - The Past Continuous Tense

  • PAST CON. CLAUSE + when + PAST SIMPLE
  • The Past Continuous: BE + INF.-ing
  • BEwas/were
  • I/He/She/It + was + INF.-ing
  • I was sleeping when you called.
  • You/We/They + were + INF.-ing
  • They were fishing when they saw it.
