Be comes before the subject in questions.

For open questions (questions with many possible answers), we use a question word.

  • Q. + BE + SUBJ + INF.-ing ... ?
  • BEwas/were
  • Q. + was + I/he/she/it + INF.-ing ... ?
  • What was he doing when she arrived?
  • He was talking to a friend.
  • Q. + were + you/we/they + INF.-ing ... ?
  • What were they talking about?
  • They were talking about a problem.
