English Grammar Guide

Superlatives

Usage - Superlatives

We use superlative adjectives to compare a group of (more than 2) nouns or activities. We often use it to state the top (#1) or bottom thing in the group.

  • SUBJECT > every NOUN
  • SUBJECT = #1

Grammar - ADJECTIVES with 1 syllable

For 1 syllable adjectives we add -est to make a noun superlative.

  • SUBJ. + BE + the + ADJ.-est + CATEGORY
  • tall tallest
  • Mount Everest is the tallest mountain.

Grammar - Consonant-Vowel-Consonant

If the adjective ends with consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) sounds and the last consonant is a single letter, we double the last consonant and add -est.

  • 1 syllable with CVC sounds:
  • bigbiggest
  • The elephant is the biggest land animal.

Grammar - 2 Syllables Ending in "-y"

We change -y to -iest for 2 syllable words ending in -y.

  • friendly → friendliest
  • She is the friendliest girl.

Grammar - 2/3/... Syllables Not Ending in "-y"

For other adjectives with 2 syllables or more, we use most with the adjective.

  • SUBJ. + BE + the + most+ ADJ. ...
  • most in-te-lli-gent
