Future Predictions: will/won't/might


Usage - will

We use will for the future.

We use will for predictions and promises.

We also use will for decisions that we make at the time of speaking.

  • Predictions about the future
  • Promises about the future
  • Decisions while speaking

Grammar - will

We use will with the infinitive.

We contract will into 'll.

  • will + INFINITIVE
  • I will come tomorrow.
  • will'll
  • I'll help you.
  • will not won't
  • I won't be busy tomorrow.

Examples - will

Iwillcallyou back later.
Youwillpassthe test.
Hewillwinthe game tomorrow.
Shewillfinishearly.

Examples - will: Contractions

Examples - will: Negative Contractions

The negative of will is won't.

Theywon'tlosetomorrow.

Grammar - will: Closed Questions ➤ Yes/No

Will comes before the subject in questions.

For closed questions (for the responses: yes and no), we use will for short answers.

  • Will + SUBJECT + INF. ... ?
  • Yes, + SUBJECT + will
  • Will he come tomorrow?
  • Yes, he will.
  • Will + SUBJECT + INF. ... ?
  • No, + SUBJECT + won't
  • Will they win tomorrow?
  • Yes, they will.

Examples - will: Closed Questions ➤ Yes/No

WillS.INF.... Y/NS.WILL
Willyouhelplater?➤ Yes,Iwill.
Willitrainlater?➤ No,itwon't.

Usage - might

We use might when we are not sure.

  • We are not sure about the future.

Grammar - might

  • might + INFINITIVE
  • It might rain.
  • might not + INFINITIVE
  • He might not visit.

Examples - might

Youmightpassthe test.
Hemightwinthe game tomorrow.
Shemightfinishearly.
Itmightrainlater.

Grammar - think ... will

We often use think in the present simple tense with will for predictions.

  • SUBJ.+ THINK + SUBJ. 2 + will + INF.
  • I think he will win.
