Distributives: both/neither of us


Usage - Things in Common: both/neither

We can use the word both for positive things in common and neither for negative things in common.

  • State that 2 people are the same or do the same thing
  • Things in common
  • both: for 2 POSITIVES
  • neither: for 2 NEGATIVES ⧿⧿

Grammar - Same/in Common: both

  • SUBJ. PRON. + both + VERB...
  • Sara likes dogs and I like dogs.
  • We both like dogs.

Grammar - Same/in Common: neither ⧿⧿

  • Neither of + OBJ. PRON. + VERB ...
  • Tom doesn't like dogs and Jerry doesn't like dogs.
  • Neither of them like dogs.

Examples - Positive Things in Common

  • Sara likes dogs and I like dogs. We both like dogs.
  • Tom likes cheese and Jerry likes cheese. They both like cheese.

Examples - Negative Things in Common

  • Sara doesn't like cats and I don't like cats. Neither of us like cats.
  • Tom doesn't like dogs and Jerry doesn't like dogs. Neither of them like dogs.

Be Careful!

  • In informal speech people often use the 3rd PERSON VERB with neither of us and neither of them:
  • Neither of us like cats.
  • Neither of us likes cats.(informal)
