The with Places and Time Phrases


Usage - the

When we talk about going to a place, we use the the first time we mention the place.

We always use the with some time phrases.

  • PLACES
  • TIME PHRASES

Grammar - the

  • the + PLACE (1st mention)
  • I went to the park yesterday.
  • the + TIME PHRASE (1st mention)
  • They went in the evening.

Examples - GO + to + the + PLACE (1st Mention)

  • Let's go to the beach!
  • I went to the park yesterday.

Vocabulary - the + PLACE (1st Mention)

the bank
the river
the shop
the park
the museum

Be Careful!

We don't use the the first time we mention a place, with there is.

  • Use a/an with Is there/There is:
  • Is there the beach near here?
  • Is there a beach near here?
  • There is the bank on this street.
  • There is a bank on this street.

Examples - the + TIME PHRASE (1st Mention)

  • I saw him in the morning.
  • They went in the evening.
