Grammar - Proper Nouns

A proper noun is a name or the name of a place. We don't use a or the with a proper noun.

  • PROPER NOUN = NAME/PLACE NAME
  • a/an/the + PROPER NOUN
  • I had lunch with a Paul.
  • I had lunch with Paul.
  • I went to the New York.
  • I went to New York.
  • the + BUILDING/MONUMENT/RIVER
  • I saw the Empire State Building.
  • I saw the Statue of Liberty.
  • I travelled down the Nile.

  • PROPER NOUNS start with a CAPITAL LETTER
  • (A-, B-, C-, D- ...):

  • PROPER NOUNS don't have an ARTICLE:
  • I went to a Spain .
  • I went to the Spain.
  • I went to Spain.
  • Use the with States/Kingdom/Republic/...
  • the United States (of America)
  • the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
  • the Republic of Ireland
  • the Roman Empire ✔
  • PARKS don't have an ARTICLE:
