Usage - Relative Clauses: where

We can use a relative clause to give more information about places. We don't need a second sentence.

  • Defining or non-defining clauses

Grammar - Relative Clauses: where

We can use where for defining or non-defining clauses.

We can use which or that with a preposition for defining clauses.

We can use which with a preposition for non-defining clauses.

  • ... where ...
  • It's the street where I grew up.
  • ... which/that ... PREP. (defining)
  • It's the street that I grew up in.
  • ... which ... PREP. (non-defining)
  • He went to the park, which he slept in.

Examples - 2 Sentences with a Place

MAIN SENTENCEINFORMATION
Oxford is a city.I grew up in Oxford.

Examples - Defining Relative Clauses

Oxford is the city where I grew up.
Oxford is the city which I grew up in.
Oxford is the city that I grew up in.
