Usage - Object Pronoun Defining the Subject

We can use a relative clause to give more information about the subject. We don't need a second sentence.

Grammar - Object Pronoun Defining the Subject

We can use an object pronoun to define the subject when we mention it again.

We can use a relative clause instead of an object pronoun when we mention it again in the same sentence.

We use who or that in place of the person.

We use which or that in place of the thing.

  • OBJECT PRONOUN RELATIVE PRONOUN
  • PERSONwho/that
  • The girl was in the library. Sue helped her.
  • The girl who Sue helped was in the library.
  • THINGwhich/that
  • The book was good. Tom read it.
  • The book which Tom read was good.

Examples - 2 Sentences with Object Pronoun

SENTENCE 1SENTENCE 2
The student was in the library.Sue helped her.
The drill has broken.You lent it to me.

Examples - OBJECT PRONOUNRELATIVE PRONOUN (SUBJECT)

The girl who Sue helped was in the library.
The girl that Sue helped was in the library.
The drill which you lent me has broken.
The drill that you lent me has broken.

Be Careful!

  • We don't need to use a RELATIVE PRONOUN for an OBJECT.
  • The soup is cold. You gave it to me.
  • The soup which you gave me is cold.
  • The soup you gave me is cold.
