Pronouns & Possessive Adjectives


Usage - Pronouns

We usually use a subject pronoun when we already know what the subject is.

We usually use an object pronoun when we already know what the object is.

  • SUBJECT = PERSON
  • OBJECT = PERSON

Examples - SUBJECT + VERB + OBJECT (SVO)

We often follow a subject-verb-object (SVO) sentence order.

Grammar - Pronouns

If the object is a person, we must use an object pronoun.

  • SUBJECT + VERB + OBJECT (SVO)
  • SUBJECT PRONOUNS:
  • I/You/He/She/It/We/They
  • OBJECT PRONOUNS:
  • me/you/him/her/it/us/them
  • I/You/He/... + VERB + me/you/him/...
  • I like her.
  • She likes me.

Usage - Possessive Adjectives

We use a possessive adjective with a noun to show that a person possesses, has or owns it.

  • POSS. ADJ. + NOUN = PERSON has NOUN
  • POSS. ADJ. + NOUN = PERSON owns NOUN

  • my/your/his/her/its/our/their + NOUN
  • I like your shoes.

Be Careful!

  • The POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVE does not affect the VERB FORM.
  • My brother am a doctor.
  • Her cats is beautiful.
  • The NOUN affects the VERB FORM.
  • My brother (= he) is a doctor.
  • Her cats (= they) are beautiful.
