The First Conditional


Usage - The First Conditional

The first conditional is for the future. The dependent clause uses the present simple tense, and the main clause uses will.

Grammar - The First Conditional

The dependent clause can come before or after the main clause.

  • If + DEPENDENT CLAUSE + , + MAIN CLAUSE
  • If + PRES. SIMP. + , ... will ...
  • MAIN CLAUSE + if + DEPENDENT CLAUSE
  • ... will ... if + PRES. SIMP.

Examples - The First Conditional

DEPENDENT CLAUSEMAIN CLAUSE
If it rains tomorrow,I will stay at home.
If it is sunny on Saturday,I will go to the beach.

Examples - The First Conditional

MAIN CLAUSEDEPENDENT CLAUSE
I will stay at homeif it rains tomorrow.
I will go to the beachif it is sunny on Sunday.

Be Careful!

  • The dependent clause uses the present simple, not will.
  • If it will rain tomorrow, I will stay in.
  • If it rains tomorrow, I will stay in.
