The Second Conditional: If I were you


Usage - The Second Conditional: If I were

We often use the phrase If I were you, I would ..., which means You should ..., when we give advice.

  • Hypothetical Situations

Grammar - The Second Conditional: If I were

With the second conditional, when be is the verb in the dependent clause, we often use were and not was.

  • If + I/you/he/she/it/we/they + were ...
  • If I were you, I would = You should

Be Careful!

  • In informal English, it is common to use was for advice with the second conditional.
  • I/he/she/it + was ... (informal)
  • I/he/she/it + were ...

Examples - The Second Conditional: If I were

DEPENDENT CLAUSEMAIN CLAUSE
If I were the President,I would help people.
If he were more careful,he'd hurt himself less.
