L'emploi - Le Past Continuous

Nous utilisons le présent continu pour une action se produisant en même temps qu'une autre action dans le passé.

Nous utilisons une proposition au passé simple pour l'action la plus courte.

Nous utilisons une proposition au passé continu pour l'action la plus longue.

Grammaire - Le Past Continuous

PAST CON. CLAUSE + when + PAST SIMPLE
The Past Continuous: BE + INF.-ing
BE → was/were
I/He/She/It + was + INF.-ing
I was sleeping when you called.
You/We/They + were + INF.-ing
They were fishing when they saw it.

Exemples - Le Past Continuous

SUBJ.	BE	...-ing	when	PAST SIMPLE

I	was	sleeping	when	he called.
You	were	reading	when	she came.
He	was	working	when	it arrived.
She	was	studying	when	I visited.
It	was	working	when	I bought it.
We	were	fishing	when	we saw it.
They	were	walking	when	they heard it.
