L'emploi - Superlatifs

Nous utilisons des adjectifs superlatifs pour comparer un groupe de (plus de 2) noms ou activités. Nous l'utilisons souvent pour indiquer le meilleur (#1) ou le pire élément du groupe.

  • SUBJECT > every NOUN
  • SUBJECT = #1
  • SUJET = #1

Grammaire - ADJECTIFS avec 1 syllabe

Pour les adjectifs d'une syllabe, nous ajoutons -est pour former un nom superlatif.

  • SUBJ. + BE + the + ADJ.-est + CATEGORY
  • tall → tallest
  • Mount Everest is the tallest mountain.

Grammaire - Consonne-Voyelle-Consonne

Si l'adjectif se termine par les sons consonne-voyelle-consonne (CVC) et que la dernière consonne est une seule lettre, nous doublons la dernière consonne et ajoutons -est.

  • 1 syllable with CVC sounds:
  • big → biggest
  • The elephant is the biggest land animal.

Grammaire - 2 Syllabes se terminant par "-y"

Nous changeons -y en -iest pour les mots de 2 syllabes se terminant par -y.

  • friendly → friendliest
  • She is the friendliest girl.

Grammaire - 2/3/... Syllabes Ne terminant pas par "-y"

Pour les autres adjectifs avec 2 syllabes ou plus, nous utilisons most avec l'adjectif.

  • SUBJ. + BE + the + most+ ADJ. ...
  • most in-te-lli-gent
  • The raven is the most intelligent animal.

Certains superlatifs sont irréguliers.
